Circumnavigating Shodoshima: For Interspecies Communication

A circumnavigation of Shodoshima for interspecies communication was organized by Asuka Sarai and James Jack in collaboration with artists Elica Masuya, Qiutong Zhai Fabio Perletta and Shintaro Miyawaki. Each human member of the sailing voyage carefully sensed more than human species along the way through creative methods including a homemade hydrophone, sea sketching, photographic and video practices. The navigational process shared by all members charting the course for day one and two while accounting for tidal currents, strong winds and preparation of supplies made each artist an integral part of the creative journey. Under sea recordings, tidal convergence drawings and more than human observations continue as an artistic research work in progress.

種を超えたコミュニケーションを目的とした小豆島一周航海は、皿井明日夏とジェームズ・ジャックが企画し、アーティストの升谷絵里香、翟秋童、ファビオ・ペルレッタ、宮脇慎太郎と協働した。航海の参加メンバーは、水中マイクによる海の音採集、海のスケッチ、写真・映像制作といった創造的な手法を通じて、航路で出会う人間以外の種をさまざまな知覚で捉えた。全メンバーが共有した航海プロセス—潮汐流や強風を考慮した初日・二日目の航路策定、物資準備—により、それぞれが創造的旅路の不可欠な一部であることを確認した。水中録音、潮汐収束図、非人間的観察は、進行中の芸術的なリサーチとして現在も継続中である。
