The tides are in constant motion, shaped by the wind, the flow of water, the pull of gravity, and the presence of known and unknown life forms. During their stay for about one month on Shodoshima, the artists immersed themselves in the island’s rhythms. They sailed across its surrounding sea, hiked Mt. Outo, listening to the wind through the forest, and cycled along the Tonosho Kashima Beach at dusk, where the air was thick with salt and the waves murmured against the shore. Through these experiences, they documented their sensations and transformed them into various artistic expressions. Each work reflects shifting perspectives and ongoing stories collected from the island, revealing the artists’ connections to its land, people, and rhythms, while keeping in mind the central question: What can we learn from the roots of the tide within Setouchi’s ecosystem today? Through a diversity of works and collaborations with the local community, the exhibition invites audiences to rethink our ever-changing relationships with the tides, the island, and other living beings.
